Fishing Marco Island & The Ten Thousand Islands
By Captain Shaun Chute, Six Chuter Charters

For years Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands have been one of the top fishing spots in the world, mainly because of its versatility. Here you have the best of the Gulf of Mexico catching King Mackeral, Permit, Cobia, Shark, Barracuda, Grouper and Snapper The Ten Thousand Islands produce Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Trout, Pompano, Snapper and even freshwater fishing in the Everglades catching Bass, Bluegill, and even Snook and Tarpon in the colder winter months.

For years both Recreational and Commercial fisherman abused these waters with their fishing and netting. The fish were so plentiful that no one ever expected that the stock could be depleted. However, this did start to happen mainly due to lack of knowledge. Take snook for example, for years limits on snook were 19 inches then, 21”, then 24”. The problem was that the snook are still immature at this length. In fact, snook are Prodilandric Hermaphrodites: meaning the males reverse sex and become females. At about 30 inches, 50% of the females are mature so for years we were depleting the stock by reducing females. Today we have a slot limit 26” to 34”. The snook reaching lengths of up to 48”. So by theory those reaching past 34” should be free to breed the remainder of their life. In the past few years I’ve seen the small snook population increase in the backwaters and this past spring I saw some of the best snook fishing in quite a few years. It’s true pressure on the fish is not going to decrease but with todays management the stocks are watched closer using fish counts, commercial and recreational seasons, length and bag limits. This will ensure that fishing in the area will continue to be some of the most fertile in the world.

I can honestly say that I guarantee each trip to catch fish. There are that many fish in this area. So, whatever your choice is to fish I can promise it will be one of the most memorable times of your visit to Marco Island.
